Earthquake city

San Francisco is a disaster nerd’s idea of a good time. Being a disaster nerd I had a good time. So much of the history of the city is connected to the 1906 earthquake and fire that destroyed almost 80% of the city.

Corner of Pine & California Sts, San Francisco. According to the tour guide on the hop on/off bus this building will withstand the “big one” but the street below will be covered in 16ft of glass. Not ideal…

A pretty boring photo but a interesting story... This is the site of the first Bank of Italy founded in 1904. After the 1906 earthquake when most of San Francisco was burning the bank boss Amadeo Giannini feared his bank would burn down too. So he went off and found a fruit cart, loaded up all his banks money (under the fruit) and carted it to safety. Luckily he did, because his banked burned down. Within the week he was able to start lending again. Nice recovery thinking friend! His bank is now called the Bank of America.
